Wave Action no. 1

This video was shot on a small, Canadian lake last summer. I edited it in Premier Pro so that the colours shifted through the spectrum. further on the theme of waves. Johnny Kember produced an electronic music sound track specific to this video based on sine waves. I think it is quite trippy, sort of a riff on Bridget Riley's paintings.

Eggs, Winter Light Through Cedars

The light in this video strikes through a cedar tree moving in the wind in late afternoon on a winter's day. I composed the sound track with the sound of a clock and a sound track of what I believe are ice cubes being stirred in a glass of water. I set the sound to describe the movement of the light in the video. My videos are done to evoke a specific emotion. They are also based on the idea of a moving, sound-filled painting. In this case it is a still life with movement.

Dawn Chorus

There are 4 3-minute clips of Windfall Lake on Manitoulin Island at sunrise. The sound track is a composition of songs of some of the birds that live around the lake. The intensity and force of the dawn chorus is diminishing because of the decline of bird populations around the world. Pollution, loss of habitat, skyscrapers alight at night, and the devastating impact of cats are taking their toll on bird populations. More and more people have never heard this glorious sound so I have attempted to mimic it's affect in my video. Keep your cats indoors! Turn off the office lights at night! Plant trees! Don't pollute!

Waves Triptych

This is the left side of a three part video installation called Waves. The video was taken in 2012 on a small lake on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada. My videos are done as single clip videos from a fixed location in order to give them the look of a painting but with movement and sound. They are generally intended to create a meditative, hypnotic or hallucinatory feeling in the viewer.

Flicker and Glow (short version)

Evening winter light was streaming through wind-tossed cedar trees and in through a window. It lit up a white cup and plate on an old tabletop. The light danced on and around the white objects changing their colour. Sometimes, it would cause the inside of the cup to glow as if there was an internal light source. I introduced the sound of a ticking clock to enhance the meditative feeling of the work.

Breathing

This video was taken on a small, spring-fed lake on Manitoulin Island , Ontario, Canada. There is a flat rock shoreline of alvar limestone. The lake level was unusually high in 2013 and the water flooded areas of rock and plants. There was a brief blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) bloom on the first hot, still day of the summer resulting in this multi-coloured foam moving in a rhythm I thought was similar to breathing. So, I introduced a sound track of breathing. To me, this is appropriate because cyanobacteria are credited with tipping the planet over to an oxygen atmosphere, causing one of the great extinctions and paving the way for oxygen-based life forms to develop. A bloom like this, on this particular lake, is the result of human carelessness and ignorance and does mess with our recreational enjoyment of the lake. But it is nature's way of balancing the chemistry of the lake. So, enjoy the brief beauty of the blue-green algae bloom.

Reflections

This is a video art piece that was taken on a small lake on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada. The lake has an alvar limestone shore line which consists of flat rock much like pavement. The water was high in the spring of 2013 resulting in extensive shallow water in areas that are frequently dry. I took the video while standing in the water and caught the reflections of sunlight from the ripples of water surrounding the 2 cedar trees. I created a sound track of lapping waves and bird and insect song from the lake shore."

Please God

Please God is a sound piece with a video of white clouds in a blue sky. The video is shown on the floor surrounded by 12 speakers. Gallery visitors must walk on the sky to hear the 12 different voices from the speakers making their appeals to God. This was done in collaboration with Norman Barney and Dale Workman.
